What a Road Trip Taught Me About Warehouse Planning

Last week, I drove from Raleigh down to Charlotte for a meeting with MHI. It was about a two-and-a-half-hour trip, and I gave myself a good 30 to 45 minutes of extra buffer time. After all, you never know when traffic or unexpected delays might pop up. Sure enough, I ended up arriving early and found myself with time to spare near my destination before the meeting.

This little experience was a perfect analogy for how we approach planning in a distribution center. At the start of the day, you plan for the worst-case scenario, just like leaving early on a drive. You staff up and leave room for those unexpected hiccups. But as the day unfolds and more information rolls in, you can start narrowing down that margin of error. By the end of the day, what was once a broad buffer becomes a precise window.

That’s exactly what LogistiVIEW does. We incorporate all sorts of data to refine those predictions: historical order volumes, the day of the week, even the individual performance of workers. That means less buffer time and a leaner, more efficient operation.

In the end, whether it’s a drive or a warehouse shift, having the right tools and the right data to dial in your plan and adjust as you go can turn a stressful schedule into a smooth, efficient operation.
